I love the carpet and I think it looks very good with your sofa, which is quite attractive. You have a nice place, but I can empathize with the difficulty of furniture placement in that space - we had a similar space in our former home and it was a challenge with that corner fireplace and the open floor plan.
I agree that the leather chair looks too crowded into that smaller space.
I think you should go dark red or the darkest of another accent color from the sofa or rug for the drapes. I would keep the wall color the same - it's very pleasant.
Art for the walls - with some of that red in the art - and you're set! Oh, and a floor lamp or something so that you don't have to rely on overhead lighting in that room.
By the way, in our former home which had a very similar floor plan, we ended up just ditching the bar stools (hardly anyone sat in them anyway) so that we could move the sofa back a bit further to give us more usable room in the living room. You may want to try that.

My son has done that, he actually has the stools on the kitchen side now....it works.
I think the size of the rug in relation to the space and furniture is the issue more than the rug itself. I agree that it is too close to what the couch looks like to really stand out but I like the rug. Can you use the rug somewhere else and get a new one that is more proportional to the room?
The rug is fine as far as coordinating with the couch. A decorator would tell you its a bit large, as usually the edge of the rug would not be under any part of the couch.
I think the rug looks just fine with the couch. I would suggest adding lighter throw pillows to the couch. A beige, close to the color of the rug to help lighten up the couch and pull the look together more.
Personally, I would go with either the bar stools or the dining room table, but not both. If the bar stools were gone, you could scoot the couch back so that you don't have to look up at a sharp angle to see the tv. If you took out the dining room table, you'd have to change out the light fixture in that area, but you could use the space for a (nicely organized) desk/computer area.
We never used our formal dining table so I got rid of it...no sense in keeping a room full of furniture that we only used for a couple holidays each year. If I have company for Thanksgiving or Christmas, I just use several card tables and a nice tablecloth.

Definitely not true. It's very common for designers to place the front legs of the sofa on a rug even when the back legs are not on it.
OP, I like the rug and think it looks fine with the sofa, but I agree with changing the furniture placement.
