hi I have been looking all over the internet on this subject and I got so overwhemed so I thought you might be of a good help to me..
so I am trying to make my basement stairs look better with as less cost as possible..I am moving out in a year and dont want to spend much..I searched about peel and stick tiles (vinyl,carpet,wood)..vinyl seems the cheapest and still nice, my stair is 41*11 inches so I have to make cuts and adjustments..but is this a good idea, it is a floor tile so does it work on stairs I mean wont it be slippery or something..I dont know..
Also, do I have to put stair nosing because they cost about 10 at least for each stair and I have 13..It is more than what I am willing to pay..so are they just decorative or a necessity?
I am also considering painting them with spray paints..good idea? I dont know if it is going to look nice with it..
I also considered stairs treads but these are much smaller than the stair dimesions which result in the wood still showing and I cant picture if it will look good

I really appreciate your input..I attached an image of how my stairs look and here is also a link to the vinyl tiles I checked in walmart

Why not just stain them an oak stain and be done? Wouldn't cost much.

First paint them, then buy a runner at the home improvement store. They have runner style carpet on a big roll so you can get the length you need. Then install so that the carpet is centered between the painted edges of each treat and riser. Or, instead of the runner, just use the tread carpet tiles on each tread. It won't look as nice but it is cheaper and will not be as slippery as paint.

I was going to suggest just staining them also. I think that would look the best. The vinyl will be slippery and you really don't want that on basement stairs.

You can also go to the 99 cent stores and get a carpet runner. I have never used it but if you are just trying to pretty it up for a while it may be the cheapest option other than staining them, which would be my idea.

I agree with this. Sand, stain, and seal it. You can be traditional with the standard wood grain or use a blue or green stain; there are some neat colors available.

I also like the idea if painting it and stenciling a design on the risers. Orrrr, stain the steps and paint the risers a solId color.

Both are fairly easy and inexpensive ways to go. Definitely an easy DIY.

Google "staircase remodel" and select images and you will get a plethora of ideas.

Look at these ideas. If you do one of them make it a more subdued theme for easier resale since you are planning to move. I would love to do this on a bare stairway.

I checked the carpet tiles for stairs in improvements..good looking ones with good price (12 for 42 including shipping)..however, they are 4 inches shorter which may not be aesthetically a good choice..
