I like eclectic, but one can only go so far with a mix of styles.. I have seen some real bad choices, and some great ones too.
I always am a color fanatic wondering if this shade of this will go with that. Especially outside trim for the house.
I just saw a deep deep blue purple front door that was a real eye catcher . And they also had red pots that went so well. I rarely see this and wish to create that myself. So unique and beautiful is a rare find.

- Warm colors (reds, oranges, dark yellows, browns, dark tans)
- Wood trim and cabinets in colors between mahogany and walnut (maybe sometimes espresso). Doors, too, as long as it's six-panel doors
- Carpets darker than ugly beige
- Built-in bookshelves and seating
- Vanities with storage in bathrooms
- Quartz to stay away from the ugly big veins that can be found in granite and marble
- Small, non-intrusive patterns in tile
- Solid curtains (no guaze)
Nays!:
- White anything: cabinets, trim, doors. Yuck
- Gray or green or anything pastel
- white tiles with white grout
- Pedestal sinks that cause you to need other storage solutions and just spend more money

That said, my wife and I agree that if something one person is doing disturbs the other one due to noise, we move the noisy activity so as not to disturb.
With 5 kids and a very active lifestyle (plus we are all just plain loud), our hose was always a raucous din. My office above the carriage house was sound dampened and in a sperate building, loud was not permitted there, so that was the place to go for an important telephone conversation skype meeting or whatever. There were quieter places to go read too, but no one wanted to be completely away form the core of the house, you might miss out on something awesome.
Now, only one and a half kids at home, it tends to be deathly silent in most rooms, except when our some practices the trumpet (which is awesome because he is ridiculously good at it). I find it hard to focus in all that oppressive silence. I will sometimes turn on a handful of radios, TVs and stereos and just let them play in the background, so I can focus. i miss the noise. - Not sure I would with an open floor plan. It would be a bit distracting then. In the background, just enough to be aware of what is going on is great.
Honestly, I can live with a lot even if it's not my favorite so I really only have a few.
Yays
White kitchen - just bought a new house. The kitchen? Maple. Figures.
Nays
Vessel sinks - they should die a decorating death and never ever come back. Ever!
Skylights - they always end up leaking and just nasty dirty in no time but impossible to clean
Wallpaper - never again. 'Nuff said.
