Looks like a very nice house. At the age of 42 stay away from anything that screams "BACHELOR!" That means no leather sectional, lazyboy chair, framed posters, cheap un-matching picture frames, oversized flat screen in the main living room or oversized stereo equipment in the main living room. I'd replace the out-dated brass chandelier with something updated and fun - perhaps a globe shape or industrial-looking one. Chandelier width should be the the approximate sum of the length and width of your room ex: 12'x10' = roughly 22" diameter. Good sources are Ballard Designs and Shades of Light. Replace the maroon window treatments with grommet top window panels that are mounted to the sides of the window and do not cover it and go to the floor. A tone on tone pattern would be nice. Find a picture of a room or two you like then head to HomeGoods, if you have that store in your area, and try to replicate the look as best you can. Get a sofa in a neutral color (gray) in sturdy fabric such as tweed or chenille. Buy a good quality rug, again I'd do a tone on tone pattern that you won't get tired of and an accent chair in geometric print. Purchase down-filled decorative pillows to tie the room together. I'm a lighting person and believe good quality lighting can really upgrade the look of the entire room. Don't pay less than $75 for a lamp. Don't feel the need to match all the wood tones either. Incorporate metal, glass and wood elements. Good luck and send out a pic when you are done
