Be sure to use the David Copperfield flat black!

Com'on! Seriously? Paint is not going to make it "disappear"!

No, no painting. Plus it’s been messed with by someone with a screwdriver or something and bent.
I think the best solution will be to take it out and replace it with stone as you suggested earlier.

its a very cool house, so it’s a shame the builder did this with such a great stone fireplace. She did some other odd things too, like put window molding in place of baseboards and the closets were Finished like a tract house closet. And no AC in a house with soaring ceilings and huge fixed windows.

see if you can find a smal horizontal stained glass window and hang it from the mantel.

Yeah. The vents on ours, both inlets and outlets, are rectangular 6X8 iron scrollwork. Looks like a starburst or sun.

I'd love to see a picture. Maybe having someone make a something out of iron that would look better is an option. Just so incredibly dumb to have done this in a stone fireplace in the first place.

Good idea but i don't think it would work. No light behind it so it would just look odd.

How about some sort of wood plaque with nice moulding. Hang from mantle so it’s 2 or 3 inches in front of the stone, and the “passive air” can still escape. Or if the air is too hot for wood, some sort of metal.
