Car wouldn't start this afternoon. Wife said she had to try twice when she used the car yesterday. It seemed like a battery problem, couple of clicks then nothing. Finally had to jump the battery with my pickup. We took it to the dealer who said they could find nothing wrong, systems all checked out OK. The car is 13 mo. old with about 10,000 miles. They sent us home and said we should call if it happens again. Your thoughts?
So the engine doesn't even crank when this happens? Just a starter motor click noise?
That's what happened. Several clicks on the first couple tries, then it wouldn't even click although the lights on the panel came on. When I first hooked up the jumpers, I left the truck engine off - no luck. So I started the truck and the CRv started when I turned the key.
Typical weak battery or loose connections. Typical experience I had with Honda with stuff that needed warranty attention.
You can make sure the connections are tight yourself, if not already done.
If it happens again, have them change the battery, if they won't have them pay for a tow truck-which they won't, but at least might push them to change it. Keep receipts and records, talk to service manager.
Key. try different key. I had 04 Cr-V and one key will do no starts, whilst the other one got me through 110 000 trouble free miles.
Otherwise, clean battery terminals and re-set them.
invest into several things:
1. battery cleaning tool
2. dielectric grease, or electrician grease
3. battery sealant.
4. terminal felt pads, green and red.
Total expense will be around $15 with tax.
When you install new battery, clean terminlas on both cables and battery. Yes, I know it's new. Clean anyway.
Lubricate felt pads with grease, as in - LIBERALLY, and set them on battery poles, red on positive.
Lubricate cable terminals and battery poles with grease.
Set cable terminals onto the poles ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE BATTERY SURFACE. If you need to hammer on them, do so, just gently. Felt pads will need to be compressed by terminals. Reason being, most folks sets them up high on conical pole, and terminal slowly works itself up on it, causing gap and corrosion.
I even drive a self tapping screw through both, to secure them in place.
Spray over with battery sealant. You good for about 2 years, then you need to do over. Re-spray sealant about once a year.
Enjoy very long lasting battery.
Honda is noted for the cheap battery they put in. I bought a used one with 8000 miles on it and the original battery in it and while washing it with the radio on, the battery drained. I use to be on a Honda owner website and this was a common problem.
