That's how I do it too, fill it and put it in a few bags, it still seems to smell, I think some gas always drips off the hose when you are pulling it out. The smell goes away, I have a lot of stuff in my trunk so it's not bad.
Everyone here is taking the gas can out of the trunk and placing it on the ground when refilling it - right?
I've transported gasoline in a can for my mower in my trunk without bags for decades and the smell goes away within a couple of minutes. Maybe my nose isn't that sensitive.
We now have a lawnmower for our lawn. We've never had a yard or a mower before, so this is all new. How do you transport the gas from the gas station back home for the mower? We put the gas container for the lawn mower in two plastic trash bags, and put it in the trunk, and filled it up and brought it back like that, and even though it was enclosed in two plastic bags it stank up the car horribly, and the smell of gasoline will not come out, even though it was in the trunk.
What is the right way to go about doing this so as to not make your whole car reek of gasoline? We don't have a pickup truck or anything like that.
Did you tighten the fill cap and close the vent cap? The nozzle gets inverted and inserted inside the can when transporting
Sometimes I put the gas cans on the ground, sometimes just leave them in the bed of the truck. Depends on the condition of my back.
Do Not fill the can while it is in the truck! In fact in some states it is illegal. It needs to be placed on the ground when it is filled. It is all a matter of proper grounding.

What grounding? Gas containers are made of plastic now. When was the last time you heard of a persons static electricity being transferred to a plastic container?

21 year old article with old style cans. The plastic cans back then are not the same as the plastic cans today (today's cans do not have the vent hole on the rear anymore). Now do you have anything with updated information for the new cans that came into existence after 2009?
