Nov 22 - With a shipping container as its frame, a new modular home in New York's West village is attracting visitors interested in sustainable, luxury living at affordable prices. Kilmeny Duchardt reports.
They are just right for a city like New York. Container houses are becoming popular all over the country. I think it's a great use of a one time use container. Did you know they are only used one way and left sitting after they are unloaded?
Intermodel containers are reusable many times. The US has a glut because they hvae so much stuff shipped in. China is hurting for intermodel containers and acrtually contracts with shippers to bring back the empty containers so they can ship more of the cheap stuff to the US and elsewhere. In ;ate October, a container ship departed the US with nothing but empty containers to hong kong so that more cheap stuff could be shipped to the Us for the Christmas shopping season.
I have seen container homes in many places and this has been discussed in other forums on CD. The consensus is that in the end, the cost of a 10' X 32' stick built home is cheaper ( and more useful) than retroing a standard 40' container. Several people have posted about their expereince converting a container and those people agreed that its a novelty and unless you have money to spend, its still a metal shoe box. To get it to be anything but a cramp, badly layed out box that somewhat has any creature comforts, expect to pay big money.
