You have to ask yourself why does a compressor only last 6 years. Something else is going on. What is your thermostat set for? In my first house I had an original equipment Lennox that was still running after 22 years.
As a couple others mentioned, capacitors can fail - may be by design, and they aren't that expensive to fix if you do it yourself. A cap stores energy for both the fan and the compressor - one or the other may stop working and it can be a little confusing on first inspection.
A blown 30 amp (or whatever) fuse located next to the outdoor unit is easy to check with an ohm meter.
The original outdoor central AC unit finally gave out (house built in 1961). I am getting a new Carrier 2.5 16 Seer Central AC unit & new indoor/outdoor coils. All contractors said my furnace (installed in 2004 & oil heat) is ok & does not need replacing. I have a digital thermostat that was installed in 1993 & it works just fine. Four said it is ok & 1 said I should replace it. I am disabled, on a fixed income & running out of money so I would like to keep the one I have. If I keep it will the contractors need to do any work/connections on it. I need 2 know so I can have somewhere here to escort them to it. Please advise!
not sure if your only asking the OP. but i havent done anything yet!! still sweating my ass off!! everyone wants to sell a brand new unit. im having a hard time finding a new outdoor unit that is compatable with my indoor unit. they keep saying that it is "obsolete." im pissed.
Do you have a split system or a heat pump. Being in Texas I would think it would be a heat pump.
Buy a window unit to give yourself some breathing room. Keep looking. Another thought is to check Craigslist.
Good advice window units are dirt cheap and good to have around for just this type of emergency. Just get one big enough to cool a room you can get by in until you've checked your options. Get your Central fixed and stick the window a/C in storage or garage until needed.
Use it to cool your garage if you work in it and it's big enough unit.

They will need to access the thermostat in order to test the newly installed unit. That being said, I wouldn't worry about escorting them, just tell them where it is.
All you people sweating your assessment off. Did you ever try a wet t-shirt and a fan? I'm not being smart, try it.
