Hi!
We bought a house and one of the older motion sensor spotlights at the back keeps turning on and off but I don't see anyone in the yard.

Temperature is around 35 at the moment and it's raining a bit

The light worked fine until today and never turned on unless we were approaching it.

What could be the problem?

Some of the older sensors are tuned to just pickup any motion -- that includes wind driven leaves and rain. The newer ones generally have circuits to ignore objects that are too small to be human. If you cannot find an adjustment to decrease the sensitivity you probably have an older style light. It costs very little to get a new motion sensor light...

Agree with OP; if you can't set sensitivity to a higher level, the wind or leaves could turn it on.
