Does anyone know the name of this type of house? I was wondering if it had a name. This picture from the Brady Bunch is the closest one I could find, but it's not perfect because it's kind of difficult to see.
Some houses are split level, built on a hill. Others have a partial 2-story on level ground.
Around here, the house the OP posted is a tri-level. The picture on the link of DubbleT is a "split foyer" or "bi-level." A raised ranch is similar, but you would go up a full flight of stairs on the exterior of the home and enter on the same level as the living/kitchen/bedrooms. Split foyer you have a half flight outside, go in the door, and then have a half flight up to the main living area or a half flight down to garage level.
Years back we would have called it a cantilevered split level. But like everything else in this country, we have to be politically correct. They're calling the same house here a cantilevered with a walk out basement. The architecture is called Southwest. Years back it was called ranch.
I had a similiar house in Andover, MA. When you came in the front door there were 6 steps up and 6 steps down. Down steps to a small hall. Off this hall was the garage entrance (two car), full bath with laundry, and one bedroom and one office/TV/whatever room with a fireplace. Bedroom had sliding glass doors out to backyard. When you entered and went up six steps you were in the living room. This level had 1 full bath, 3 bedrooms, kitchen, combo dining and living room, and entry to a screen porch. The upper level front overhung the lower level front by about 3 to 4 feet. We called it a split level ranch. Also called a split entry ranch.
To me a tri-level has 3 levels. I had one of them in Columbus OH. It had 3 distinct levels.
You entered front door directly into a very large living room. Windows on 3 sides and a fireplace.
Against one wall of the living room were three stair cases.
The middle set went up 6 steps to a level that had 3 bedrooms and a full bath.
The other two stair cases went down 4 steps to the same a level that contained a eat-in kitchen, dining room, family room with a door to the ground level patio, 1/2 bath, laundry room, utility room with an entrance to a crawl space under the living room.
There was a 3 car garage behind the house.
The lot was sloped and this design worked quite well. Was very a very roomy house but a smal foot print.
