I have seen neighbors leave garage door cracked open a bit on hot summer days. Does lowering your garage temp affect the temp inside your home? Can someone explain why people do this?
My aunt has a cat that is mostly an indoor type but the litter box is in the garage. Letting some air in there, especially on a hot day. is a almost a necessity..

Our cat is indoor/outdoor but does not use a litter box. Recently, my wife and son were gone for several hours in the evening (I was out of town for work) and she left the garage door cracked and also left open the door going from the garage into the house.
When she got home and opened the garage, another cat from down the street darted out of the garage as soon as the door opened. Then when she got inside, the neighbor across the street's cat was running around the house with our cat.
In some communities, it is a violation of the CC& Rs and you will get fined.
Can you imagine???? Buying a house and having to worry about leaving your garage door open???? so you don't get a fine...
It always amazes me that people will actuallybuy homes with this type of crap.......and pay a HOA fee ta-boot
OK Mr & Mrs Smith, you left your garage door open for 6 minutes on the 15th, and 8 and a half minutes on the 25th, you are hearby ordered to pay a fine of 65.00, and you must stand in the corner with a propeller on top of your head.
I open mine on hot summer days to let the air flow . My garage window faces west and a lot of heat can come through their on some days. If I have plans to work on a project in my garage, or if I'm cleaning it out, I want to air it out first so I'm not roasting in there.
I remember readings or seeing someone explain once that cooling the garage also helps to cool the temp inside your home due to something about airflow/physics that I cannot remember.
I think there is more to it than just cooling the garage, but who knows...
I crack ours a bit on hot days to get some airflow i nthere. A couple years ago, an ex-con who was just released from prison slid into a poor old woman's garage through the crack left open for her dog and murdered her Obviously rare, especially around here, but something to consider.
Your engine block has so much stored heat that it can boost your garage temperature, especially in the heat of the summer. However if your house has decent insulation it shouldn't make much difference. The local police departments are continually reminding people to shut their garage doors. Sometimes a crew will target a neighborhood, someone drives a car or van, people on foot dart in to an open garage and are gone in no time. Days later you can't find the bicycle, string trimmer, generator, whatever and maybe you put two and two together. Some folks leave the door to the house unlocked as well and have had someone come into their house.
