I live in a safe neighborhood but the bottom line is if anyone rings my doorbell and I am not expecting anyone (especially if I am alone) I don't answer my door yet my dogs bark like crazy! I think any female is vulnerable alone.

You never know. The neighborhood we just moved into is fairly nice for our town, but I was told there had been a couple garage break ins in the past.

Mostly thieves seem to look for unlocked doors or flimsy doors that can be easily kicked in. Locking your doors and having a quality deadbolt intstalled is usually enough to deter most thieves.

Statistically, men are more likely to be victims of violent crime.

Google -- women men statistics of violent crime

People break in houses even when the occupant is home.

So are home invasions more likely to occur in houses as opposed to apartments, depending if the apartment complex is secured, well-walled, and gated?
That's why god invented the second amendment! Hope for the best but prepare for the worst, as they say... it would be silly to avoid living in a house just because of a fear of becoming a victim of a home invasion.
