we paid the town to do a new sidewalk recently but I notice a nickel-size hole in one of the slabs. It has jagged edges so I'm sure it wasn't done on purpose. Will this expand into cracks if left alone? What's the best way to fix this? Would I do more harm than good?

Call them, express your concerns, and tell them to come out and patch it. Please let us know what happens!

A nickel size hole???? Really???
It was probably a rock that was close to the surface and popped out when they finish troweled it.
Go get some concrete patch and fill the hole.

Call them back out for that??? That could be a reason our taxes are so high.

How high are your taxes? We're paying $15k/year. Maybe I should call them back out!

Its usually a sign of an air bubble that wasn't screed out. If there are more air bubbles then its possible over time that it may crack. It depends on if the concrete mix was tested before being poured. Its not going to come from a rock, since code requires a layer of sand/small pebbles (or scrapes depending on the town) be sprinkled across the top to make it not slippery when wet.

There you go Neil! Could be a bad batch, poor installation etc...
Might as well call sooner than later rh; it'll probably bug you till you do! No sense in paying and taking your time to fix someone else's work.

And do you think it will cost less in five years after a few freeze and un-freeze cycles have happened?

well I hit the HD and bought a small tube of concrete filler... I can't believe I'm out another $3.58 after spending $1500! Oh and gas money.

"Its not going to come from a rock, "
Since there is aggregate in the mix (small rocks), poor application, mix, tamping, troweling, etc. can leave the small rocks (aggregate) near the surface, then they can pop out when the slab dries out.
Could be an air bubble too.

Usually a brush finish will give the nonslip texture needed without broadcasting sand and pebbles.
