I thought they were all a scam or at least offered terrible cust service... we had never had a warrantee plan before. That said, we were offered one free with the purchase of our re-sale house this spring. We chose Old Republic as they seem the best reviewed from the bunch. Two weeks later the oven stopped heating to above 300 degrees. Old Republic sent a tech out. Turns out they dont make the parts needed for repair for our Whirlpool wall oven any more, so, they replaced our oven with a brand new one that's worth about $1000 .
Can't really complain considering all I paid was $60 for the service visit.

Right, that is ideal since you didn't pay the premium, but there are idiots that pay 400+ annually for years and years and are happy to get a dryer, washing machine, and ceiling fan.

For argument's sake though, even if I had paid the $400 for a year's service contract and the same thing happened, I'd still come out on top since my new GE oven costs $1100, yes?

Well, let me add to your argument and say that after many appeals and complaints HSA wrote me a check for $2200.00 to cover our HVAC replacement (what they said a 5-ton unit equivalent would cost). It wasn't even near what the price was to replace our unit.
I thanked them for the $2200 and for honoring the warranty a day late and many thousands short and cancelled shortly after.
Still a rip off even though I got $2200 out of $450 for a single year that didn't come from my pocket.
