All depends on neighborhood / individual house. In areas where break-ins to garages are common the idea of having a somewhat more secure attached garage is probably a plus, but also such areas tend to less commonly have attached garages (which probably contributes to higher incidence of break-in...).
In some areas all you see are ugly attached garages fronting everyone's boring tract home.
If an detached garage is executed in a way that enhanced the usability of the yard that is huge plus -- typically corner lots really can be made more private with a little courtyard shield by such a garage.
In areas where the weather is harsh an attached garage can be a welcome "air lock" to keep temperatures in the home more stable and segregate the messy outdoor gear.
More important things to worry about in pretty much case!
House first, garage second. I prefer older houses, and they rarely have attached garages. Some may be literally attached to the house, but there's no entry to the inside from the garage.
The house I have now has a bit of everything... which is one of the reasons I got it.
1) carport by the kitchen door (98% of my in's and out's)
2) second parking spot right next to the car port (uncovered)
3) garage built into the house (gonna lose that after remodeling basement)
4) detached garage at back of lot with ginormous shed for yard stuff.
5) and additional parking for trailer and RV
I think detached garages are passe'. I do see somewhat of a comeback for some house or townhome designs, but no thanks.
What I really like are brick 3-story townhomes, with a 2-car garage underneath in front ... or in the back from a motor court of sorts. Living in Atlanta for a while really turned me on to that type of housing option.
I've had both. I prefer an attached garage for the reasons already listed here.
Our detached garage was in the back yard and about 25 feet from the back door. It was in So CA so rain was not really a factor.
I like the attached garage a lot better.
As far as "An attached garage will cost you more in homeowners insurance" goes....I was curious, so I called my insurance guy and he said it made no difference in my rates. Maybe some companies charge more?
