If you don't want to spend much money, go to Home Depot (or the equivalent), buy a closet rod & cut it to length.

^^^Or take the length you need to your local, independently owned lumber yard. They will probably cut it for you.

Broom or rake handle cut to size works very well.

There are special locks that screw at the top with chains. I have seen them but never felt the need for them. The broom handle fits right in the grove and is not in sight so the person trying to enter has no idea why they cannot get in. Of course this will not stop someone from breaking the glass but it will keep some people out.

A simple 1x2in piece of wood cut to length and snug fitting will do the same thing. The issue is a snug fit so it cannot be lifted easily with a wire coat hanger slipped in the door crevice.

There is also a drop rod that drops across the door into a "bracket", then a pin that keeps the rod in the bracket.

There is a pin device that you drill a hole from the door slider frame into the door frame and insert the pin. This will prevent them from lifting the door but be very, very, very very (did I say very) careful installing such. I once drilled into and shattered the glass door.

Hope this helps.

you need to invest in something more noticeable (dog, Security system) to deter the thieves from targeting your property.

If that's the case, I'd suggest you sit in a dark corner, in a chair, holding a shotgun.

What if you set a chair leg on the rod. Do you think the hanger would allow them to lift the rod then. Maybe that is when the security lock and chain at the top would take over. Maybe having both would work. I have often thought about getting a wire door to use at the end of the day like the ones at the mall that secure the stores that have glass in front.
