I live in an apartment complex. Two days agao I flushed the toilet, heard a bang from below floor and then brown water came up while toilet continued to flush. Then brown bits came up. Flushed again and again and it finally ran clear but still had brown bits.. Then tried sink and brown water came out with the brown bits. Water is running clear now but still have some residue.

Any idea what the bang was and what could have happened? I want to call maintenance but think they won't look into it if it seems better.

I would not drink or wash anything in the tap water until you find out what that is.

Did the pressure change? (ie. did water start coming out of the sink really hard?)

Just call the landlord, it is his problem.

Air pockets build up in water lines (especially multi family) and finally pop. This is usually associated with vibration that knocks thing loose in the lines. If lines are galvanized pipe you may be getting corrosion from vibration, and or sediment broken loose. As long as the water quality and clarity return I wouldn't be too concerned. Newer dwellings would have devices to minimize this problem.

My last project was in a hospital with my desk under a 3" water main. It was always a bit weird to watch it move back and forth when quite and alone in the early am. This would occur when a sudden draw was taken from the system like a water closet Flushometer.

Thanks for your responses, feel better since this makes sense! The water seems to be running clear now! I did notify building maintenance!
