Look closer. It could be on the shaft.

It does not look like the springs coiled up and bouncey on a suspension.

Tiny thing:

I'm assuming the fins are in the knobs. It's possible they became unseated and were pushed into the knob. You can use a small screwdriver or something else to pull them back out. Once they're in the spot where they can compress, they should slide on with a little more pressure. If you look at the picture, the fin should be all the way out.

What I called 'fins' are just two tiny nubs of plastic inside at a 10 and two o'clock position. They don't move .

In the realm of things, it's a minor annoyance and one I'll not have to deal with after we leave Sat for our trek south for the winter so I will still welcome a solution and thank those that did and might still reply but will otherwise leave it until spring and probably just buy some replacements

If the inserts aren't missing try spreading the shaft open. Assuming it's gas stove the gas valve stems (shafts) generally are split and you can spread them slightly with a screw driver. If it's electric it still might have split shafts that can be spread to make knobs fit tighter. Or place a bit of aluminum foil over stem then replace knob.

This. ^^^ I have spread split shafts on a number of older electronic potentiometers. Wedgies can be from toothpicks, foil, index cards, etc.

Ah! This gave me hope for at least them not falling off, even though it wouldn't get them up flush with the body.
But...the shaft is U shaped and wouldn't spread with moderate pressure .
However, a wrap of electrical tape around it does keep them from falling off easily.

Have you done a search on the problem using the stove model? I was removing a door panel on a car and didn't want to force it off. A youtube video showed me where one more screw was located and that it was okay to use a little force to get it off.
