hi all,

turns out we need to replace an underground oil line from our basement oil tank to our furnace. Underground lines are illegal, so the options are (1) to run the line up from the tank, along the ceiling, and to the furnace-disadvantage is that it may be hard on the oil pump; (2) run the line along the floor to the furnace-disadvantage is that the line needs to be covered with a cement bump where it crosses walkways, in two places in our basement, and the bump will cross the entry to the basement laundry room.

We really don't want the tripping hazard from the bump to be there every time we go into the laundry room. However, is there a downside if we have the line run along the ceiling to the furnace? WE already have a lot of other lines (water, electrical) along the ceiling in the basement. Will the line along the ceiling make it hard to sell the house?

So, should we choose option 1 or 2, and why? We prefer option 2. Thanks!

One line should be fine unless you have a large distance from the tank to the pump. Mine runs along the ceiling too, but with a two pipe setup for positive prime. Never had an issue with our setup in 14 years. Ours is run quite tidy along the cellar ceiling and totally out of the way.

Some doorways have a threshold which you get totally used to stepping over.
With tapered sides, this should be no different.

Call your local natural gas company.

Does being a "A Nerd Living in Berkeley, Denver" mean you don't know that gas companies don't run oil lines or that maybe the op lives in an area without natural gas or that maybe even if he did, he doesn't care to spend extra thousands of dollars switching over his furnace?
Or are you just naturally 'helpful"?
