I clean my microwave every time that I use it and I clean it with hot, soapy water. I just cannot stand to open it and smell anything. If I had my way, probably no one else would use it but me.

If non Indian people are visiting, its cleaned 3-4 hours prior to their arrival (don't want them to get freaked out by the smell of tamarind).

If there is a spill, the microwave is cleaned instantly.

Else, I do it every 2 weeks. Its cleaned with hot water and dawn dish washing soap.

I mainly use it for reheating coffee and occasionally reheating leftovers. It gets wiped up when things spill or splatter. The glass plate gets put through the dishwasher probably about once a week. When I have lemons on hand (usually in the summer), I'll run it with some lemon-water in a small dish for minute or so. Also probably once a week I wash it out with a soapy rag/sponge, followed by a wipe-down with 409. I cannot stand that nasty, stale "microwave smell"....

OK, I'll bite. I wipe it out when it needs it, and the same day I deep clean my fridge, I'll also do the microwave, and bleach the counter tops, as well as scrub down the outside of the cupboards.
That's the way message boards work - one thing leads to another so there tend to be trends. The fridge-cleaning thread was exactly why I started this one.

I use one of those plastic food covers when I reheat foods in my microwave so rarely do I get any splattered foods. I clean mine 2 times a week. I have seen some horrible looking microwaves from people I know who just don't care to clean up any splatter. Gross!! As soon as there is a mess I clean it right away. I have owned my microwave 11 years, the only downside at the moment is where the turntable is, the coating is coming off so it makes my microwave look unclean when it really isn't.

I hate splatter in the microwave, so I make sure all foods are covered while nuking. Otherwise, if I notice a smell or see a splatter, I clean it.
