In our 12ft slider we opted to not get the grid. With our manufacturer (Simonton) the grid is 100% aesthetics.
Our thought was...we are opening up this wall with glass to bring the outside in, so why block the view with grids? My wife at first wanted them, and i persevered... now that the slider is installed with no grids, she is very happy that we went without them.
I dont even want the screens in place. hah

That's why I don't necessarily understand the point of adding them to a door like this unless it's serving some function. I suppose you could make the style consistency argument, except that a set of 16' sliders is itself not style consistent with the kind of houses that typically have divided panes (cape cod, craftsman, tudor, colonial). Actual old cape houses had french doors. I'll add though that in a house I lived in that had divided panes in the front and upper floors, most of the bird impacts were in the living room that had no dividers.
