Air cleaner with an ion generator. Sometimes they can work "too" well. For instance, we had one in the basement next to the cat's litter box. It wasn't until the power went out one day that we realized the cat had been making quite a mess elsewhere in the room. Without the cleaner running the odor was pungent enough to detect 1 floor up!
There are lots of natural ways you can generate good smells in your house, such as using essential oils or simmering citrus peels. Here's one website I found by googline "natural ways to make your house smell good":
I honestly had no idea what these artificial scents could do. I wonder if it has been affecting my dog? All I know is that my headaches have been HORRIBLE lately and I had no clue why. It could be a number of things (allergies, stress, etc), but I'm sure these scents haven't helped.
I would love to open the windows, especially since we have a screened-in porch, but we have a few problems here: way too hot already (mid 80s this week with humidity) and SC has some nasty bugs.

I've lived in the deep South most of my life (including in SC) so believe me, I know what you mean about heat, humidity and bugs. I recommend that you open your windows or doors (with screens) late at night or first thing in the morning. I live in east Texas now and I do that even in the summer time, even if it's just for an hour or so - it really does help freshen the house, even with the humidity. A window fan might help too.
There's nothing as fresh as fresh early morning air! LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT. Also, if you don't have a clothesline, I recommend that you get one and use it - even if it's just to hang things on to air them, like bedspreads, pillows, etc. That hot southern sun beating down on things really sanitizes things and makes everything smell so GOOD.
Nearly every day that it's sunny here, I drag my dog's bed out to the front porch and let it sun out there. You have a screen porch - you could also air your bedding, pillows, etc out there. I even take my sofa pillows outside to air them sometimes. I really got into this "airing" thing when we lived in Germany - all the hausfraus there hang their down comforters and pillows out their upstairs windows regularly to let them air. It really does make a huge difference. In between washings, I even take my bath rugs outside to air.
OK - maybe I'm a little anal about this, but my house always does smell very fresh and clean. Or so people tell me. And nothing is more fabulous to lay down on than a pillow that's been sunning outside all day. Ahhhhhh....
