I bought a house and just finished installing new hardwood floors. The move-in date will be next week. What should I do to protect the hardwood floors from scratching and denting during moving. I will use a moving company, but still worried about how the moving guys will handle the heavy furnitures. Does anyone have similar experience? Thanks.

Why not ask the moving company what their procedure is for protecting floors, etc.(?)

Over 25+yrs of residential construction, and a visit on moving day, I've seen a lot of different ideas employed by moving companies. Some good, some not so good, some had good intentions but failed on execution. Others were plain dangerous

When you get their procedures, think about how they will apply to your new home and the possible consequences of doing it wrong. Every scenario is different; just like every precaution can have a different outcome depending on how it is used.

A common procedure is to lay down walkway area strips of the heavy red underlayment paper that is used below hardwood floors. It will protect from surface scratches, hand cart tire marking, and the foot traffic.

Don't let them use that sticky plastic stuff.

They will tell you that it doesn't harm the floor or leave a residue but it does. I will never do that again.

+1. It's called rosin paper, and you can get a huge roll for 10-15 bucks. I bought some a few years ago for a specific project, and I still have the same roll even though I use it for all kinds of things. Works great as a drop cloth, for protecting a tabletop when working on a small project (glue, paint, etc.), for laying on if you have to work under your car, for protecting your car's floorboard or cargo area when hauling messy things, etc., etc.

We used the cardboard boxes the wood came in. We cut all the tape on the boxes and laid them out flat. We also used other cardboard boxes from other things that we bought. We have been here for a month and we STILL have cardboard in some rooms. (We are slowly getting rid of it.)

Yeah you can't under estimate the uses of old card board boxes. LOL.
