hi,
we have two showers upstairs....the master has no issues.....but the guest bathroom (which we use for our kids) has an issue: every night, when we turn it on, it starts running but after a second or two, the water stops. we turn off the knob, then turn it on, and get another second or two of water.....this goes on for 5 or 10 minutes, before the water starts running normally....

what's going on?

A pressure regulator issue would affect all your fixtures. That's not something that is on individual fixtures.

It's like the old ping pong ball in the gas tank trick, except it works and there's no gas tank.

The symptom sounds like the "thermostatic mixing valve" also know as an "anti-scald valve" for the guest bath / kids shower is faulty. Some are designed to allow repair without total replacement and it worth determining if somehow it could just be misadjusted, but it should not be overly expensive to repair.
