I see pick-up trucks / trailers coming back from the forest with neatly stacked firewood - each piece cut exactly the same length. All large around sizes of wood, no "little stuff".
They must spend hours doing this?
When I go get firewood, I just throw it all in the back of my truck. Various lengths and sizes. Small around pieces as well as large. Mixed types of wood. (I always say; "It all burns!")
Then I cut the pieces to shorter lengths when I get home and split it as needed, then throw it into a big messy pile.
This method is less work. But this seems to irritate the "perfect firewood stack guys" to no end???
I used to cut and haul wood- I didn't care one way or the other how anybody else gathered and hauled wood.
Why do say your method irrates others? People confront or comment to you about gathering firewood?
I used to rack and stack 6 cords. I made these racks using free leftover deck lumber that my old neighbor would give me (he installed a lot of decks). 4x4 skids made it nice- I could tug them anywhere on my property.
When my dad does firewood, he has a gas powered log splitter that gives him firewood that looks all the same. Not really sure what the complaint here is though.
When you're hauling wood (like in a pickup or on a trailer), when stacked, you'll be able to hold twice as much as opposed to just throwing it in the same area.
When they're all the same diameter it normally means they're coming from the same tree, most likely from deep in the woods where there are no branches in the bottom 40-50'.
If they're all cut to the same length, the guy knows what length he wants and cuts them there. I cut all of mine by eye within about an inch of each other. Length is important in many wood stoves. Not so much in a fireplace or outdoor wood burner where there's plenty of length or width to handle varying sized logs.
This is generally how I hauled wood- and I dumped it in a big pile and let it sit.
This is my old 'backyard'. At one point me and my buddy (he's in the picture) would stack up 12+ cords of wood. It was wood for both of us.

Yeah, cutting by eye I usually get them all within an inch of each other as well. It's never seemed that hard to do, and doesn't take any extra time. I like to cut them to a specific length so they'll fit crosswise in my smoker. Oh - and I do keep different types separated for the smoking woods. Firewood I don't really care.
I get my wood from a friend's farm and use his Kubota to go out in the woods to gather it. Since the bed is kind of small I get a lot more into it by stacking it neatly, although (again) it really doesn't take any longer than just throwing it in. I mostly just aim when I'm throwing.

Anyone who is irritated by the way someone else handles their firewood has more serious issues than irritation.
