My parents had well water. When I visited them and drank the water and brushed my teeth with the water. I never noticed it having a bad taste, just a different taste. But when I would go home I would notice an unpleasant smell to my mouth. Not my breath, but my mouth - teeth/gums. And an unpleasant taste. It was strange. I would notice it the rest of the day and maybe the next morning after I got home. Once I started drinking our water and brushing with our water, it went away. I don't remember now how I narrowed it down to the water, but I think it was the only constant each time I visited them. And I'm not sure why well water would cause that, but I was glad I wasn't drinking that every day. I'm not against well water, but something was just off about theirs.

It was probably all the minerals in the well-water you were using at your parents house. Well water (unsoftened), most of the times, is probably actually a lot cleaner/purer then city water......but many times it does smell, taste and look pretty funky.

I know some like the way well water tastes but I can always smell it, even in clothes that are washed in well water.
I moved into a house a year and a half ago with well water and septic. So far there has been no problems. My system came with a household filter, and a water softener. The water tastes great, much better than water piped in from a treatment plant. The only expense so far has been about $10 for a refill on the salt pellets for softener. Not having to pay a water and sewage bill is a bonus. Your water supply is limited if the power goes out as the pump runs on electric.
Exactly my thoughts! I just bought a house with a well and septic. I grew up with septic so that was nothing new, but I was worried about the well at first. Well water can vary, depending on location, etc. One thing I know is that treatment/softeners are much more sophisticated today than 20+ years ago, so I wouldn't worry too much...just be sure to have a water test done and have a well service come out to check the water/equipment and make any necessary recommendations. It seems like once they are properly set up they are virtually maintenance free. Also, I was concerned about pressure, but you can get a good pump and have really good pressure. Like it was said, the only issue is having a back-up for electrical outages, and that's something I am working on now. For the time being I've got some gallons of water stored and stock up on cases of bottles just in case.
My current water tastes amazingly clean and cold and I don't have to worry about contaminants like in the public system where people dump who knows what in their toilets and run-off drains.
