Yes I've used Walmart paint and it looks just fine!
As a test, paint one bedroom with Walmart paint. Then paint another bedroom with a "name" paint like Martha Stewart, Ralph Lauren, or one of those expensive paints. Then ask people to look at each room and tell you which paint was used for each.
For that matter, go into other people's homes and tell them which brand of paint they used for each room. Then ask if you are correct.
You can do the same thing with stereos. LISTEN to different brands and say which sounds the best (blindfolded). Those "names" don't always win!
I find that the brand name does not matter one bit.
Good prep - and more importantly, good taste - will always win out. I see folks who put the most outlandish colors on their walls. I have zero taste, of course, but the wife has a great eye for color. If it were me, I'd paint all the walls off-white (hey, it works!) but if you want a bit of color, go for just that - a bit. The biggest mistakes are made by those who want to mix 2 outlandish, strong colors, and just don't have the eye to do so. The paint brand? Not as important as taste, IMO.
I've used a lot of different paint. Some brands do seem to cover much better than others, imo, but the price isn't a good gauge for quality. I bought some Dutch Boy paint at Walmart six years ago that looks much better than the Walmart generic brand. I used very expensive paint in my living room (forget the brand) and that doesn't look as good as the two rooms covered in Dutch Boy.
