I am re-doing the floors in my mudroom and will be replacing the 80's style base molding with something more modern. The mudroom is in the basement which is 75% below-grade except for the garage side. I've chosen vinyl plank flooring due to moisture concerns. I am in Eastern Massachusetts. Would you choose MDF or pine base molding to complete the job? I'm not sure what the difference is, although the price is about the same (about $10 extra for pine to do the whole room).
Whoa, we are twins. re-doing my basement and am finished with subfloor. 75% below grade and awaiting my vinyl plank flooring to be delivered. finishing my drywall this weekend.
I used MDF for crown mold and will likely do so for base.
Not MDF. MDF has a magical power to reach out and find water so as to commit suicide.
Personally, I prefer poplar for its paint holding properties. And, it is much harder than pine.
Basement? Poly is the only thing I would use. Seriously, for applications where moisture is a potential issue it the superior choice -- ProFinsih
Seconded. Actually, I try to use the plastic molding throughout the house -- you don't need to paint it, it doesn't scuff when the vacuum cleaner bangs into it and you just have to wipe it occasionally with a damp rag to clean it off. But I always go with the practical over the "elegant" in my decorating choices.
