The problem with most side-by-sides is that it's difficult to put large items (like pizza) in the freezer. My next one will likely be the french door/bottom freezer type.

Sub-Zero.
Built in or integrated.
Freezer on bottom

Had one for 24 years.
Want one now.
Cannot justify nuking 4 year old kitchen.
Sad.

Easy to solve. Move one shelf up two notches.

Oh, I will mention this.. I'd never buy a fridge/freezer with separate compressors. Where each side (fridge and freezer) has its own independent cooling system.

Now, in one way.. That's great.. compressor fails on the fridge, your freezer is still fine, don't lose the food in it.. But.. You're paying ALOT for those dual compressors and have 2 to fail, along with 2 evaporators, 2 condensers.. And, if the fridge side goes out, you're just going to keep it?

Those have their place, but unless you're running a catering business from the home.. Your kitchen likely isn't that place.

We have a two-door regular refrig at home, top freezer, bottom refrigerator; an old side-by-side in the basement for extra storage; and a French-door frig, bottom freezer at our beach rental condo.

I'm short, so I guess I don't mind bending down to either the freezer or the veggie drawer. Each style definitely has its own advantages. But I'd never have a side-by-side as my primary refrigerator, that's for sure! The shelves just aren't wide enough.

I love the French-door refrig at the beach, especially for entertaining because it accommodates VERY wide platters so well. But it's much too big for the space here at home. I guess I'm pretty happy with my plain vanilla two-door, freezer-on-top refrig here at home, as long as I have my extra storage space for both refrigeration and freezing in the basement.

This is what I want, although maybe not in yellow. Don't even get me started about the stoves. I can't decide if I want one from the 20s or one from the 40s or one from the 50s. Or even one from the 1880s.

Our electric rates are forty four cents a kilowatt hour, so that determined our refrigerator choice.

1. Energy Star (because of the electric rates)
2. Less than 24 cubic feet (because of the electric rates)
3. Freezer on top (more efficient, they say)
4. Ice maker in the freezer (tired of ice cube trays)
5. White (no more stainless steel or black, there are too many fingers making prints in the kitchen)

Whatever fits the space, in our case the kitchen space was not that big so counter depth was almost a must. We have spare fridge in the garage for beer, extra milk, parties or whatever. It's a medium sized fridge and doesn't get opened and closed that much so not really a big deal.

You eat a lot of ice cream don't you? How much time do you spend bending down for stuff in the fridge? We've had just about every style fridge there is and this is ideal, again with the space issue in our particular circumstances the shorter door makes a difference so french door was almost a must too.

Also, wonder how much room the ice maker takes up.
About a shelf and a half on the door, the ice bin is not that big but we don't use a lot of ice. We store extra in the freezer for parties or large gatherings.
