I know windows tend to make a POP sound in the winter, especially at night when the temps drop, but I have never experienced this happening in the summer, with temps in the mid to upper 70's at night.
Currently living in an apartment, been here several months now and the popping noise started 3 nights ago. It's been in the upper 80's and 90's during the day, temps drop into the ~75 degree range at night... no different than all summer.
I called maintenance and they came over to look at it - of course the window makes no sound at all while the guy was here
No solution provided...
Any ideas as to why it's all of the sudden making this noise? wakes me out of a deep sleep at night, so annoying!
Does it get direct sunlight late in the day? Aluminum?
If so, my guess would be contraction. It expands from the heat of the Sun, then contracts as it cools off- the popping is the frame moving against the fasteners.
Another possibility is instead of the frame moving its the balances- I've had the spiral spring balances expand and contract from heating of direct sun light. Removing them and lubricating fixed that problem.
Both of the above posts explain issues I have had. The one about the bugs is funny, because I had forgotten all about that possibility. I used to be extremely freaked out by tapping/cracking/popping on my patio door (the only window without a full screen) until I realized that it was bugs hurling themselves at the glass.
In newer double-glazed vinyl windows, the spring mechanism does seem to expand and contract and make noises. I have never noticed similar noises in old-fashioned wood windows.
I only really notice these things when I am home alone at night, so I have never been able to say whether they happen all summer long, or only at specific times, as I am not usually alone at night.
This may seem like a dumb question, but is there a light nearby that may be attracting insects that are hitting against the window?
We've had june bugs and other large beetles fly into our windows multiple times before, and it can be pretty loud.
That's not a dumb question, but no, no lights nearby at all. Do the bugs fly into your windows at night too???
It's coming from the vicinity of the window, but who knows... it could actually the wall or ceiling.
I guess there's nothing I can do about it except turn up the white noise maker to a higher volume. Oh and fast track the home search so I can get out of here!

The bedroom faces west, but as I said, I haven't noticed this until the last few days - and it's been a very hot summer. So why start now?

These are vinyl windows. But I am not 100% sure it's coming from the windows... the vicinity, yes.
There's a tree right outside the window and branches are hitting the screen of the window as well as the exterior wall, but they're skinny branches, and I've heard them rustling before - it's a much softer sound, can barely hear it.
Hi. I've experienced this popping sounds at all times of days and nights with our home windows. But, it doesn't stop there. Also when I'm driving in my car day or night my car windows pop too! I believe this is something spiritual. I know it's not positive but it's actually nagative. No harm done but it's not good tho. I don't know what to make it it rather than sprites beings trying to frighten you.

Yep, those "nagative sprites" will get you everytime!
