I have to clean some curtains, and it's been so long that I don't remember how I did it last time. They're the kind of curtains that have what I guess you'd call gathers at the top, with a metal hook through them. Do I try to lift down the whole thing and remove the hooks, or what? Or will the cleaners take them with the hooks so that I don't have to punch them through the material again?
That is called pinch-pleated - taken them down, hook and all, remove the hooks and keep them - then get them cleaned. You shouldn't have to "punch thru" - the hook goes in between the pleating!
If it's been a long time since you cleaned them don't be surprised if they fall apart at the cleaners. They need regular care, like yearly or bi-annually.
It depends on the fabric and the amount of sun they've gotten, whether they'll have trouble at the cleaners. If it's a loose, open weave, they may shrink. If it's a delicate fabric and they've gotten a lot of sun, the fabric may fall apart. Don't be surprised if the cleaners want you to sign a release.
Sometimes it can be more cost effective to replace old curtains with new, washable ones than to have the old ones cleaned.
Once a year? You've got to be kidding. I'm a terrible housekeeper. Once a decade is more my speed.
Okay, I managed to unhook the drapes, although there was a difficult hook on each where they met at the center, and I'm worried about not being able to get that back in.

Taking them to the cleaners - wish me luck!
oh your killin me'
since we are talking decades here, take them down, throw them out and buy new curtains.

You are perfectly welcome to buy me new curtains, thanks.
But, hey, big excitement. I took the curtains over to a cheap cleaners, with my fingers crossed. They're rather heavy dark-beige curtains, and I was hoping that the heavy fabric meant it would last. Imagine my happy surprise when I instead got back curtains that were a bright, light cream color!

Now my next worry is re-hanging them.
Wonder if whoever got the dark-beige curtains back was as excited.
