I moved back in after law school in 1982, and moved out for good in November 1986, at age 29. I spent many happy weekends there during my remaining bachelor years of 1987-1989, see post in When did you start to feel like a grown up? (link to post) and then with my fiance and wife during ensuing summers until they moved out at the end of 1993.

18, shortly after I got my first job. My dad, stepmother and her three children then moved to a smaller house with one fewer bedroom, so there was no room for me. I could not have moved back home even if I wanted to. They also got rid of all my stuff without telling me.

I hope this poster is female because it is unacceptable for males to live at home that long. For females, one can live at home forever and dating prospects are not hampered. For males, it is quite different.
Unacceptable for whom?

I've heard of folks where the kids lived at home with their parents even though everyone had jobs. Say what you will, but the 2 kids got married and moved out eventually. Furthermore, all living under one roof meant each of the kids had hundreds of thousands of $'s saved since that wasn't thrown out to rent.

Reminds me of a news bit how a guy saved 90% of his income by "living differently".....

Anyone who thinks that kids should be out by 18 that's fine, it's your opinion. Anyone who thinks females can stay after 18 and males shouldn't is a misogynist, who thinks women are weak. There are parts of the country where there is nothing to do but get married and have kids and move out of your parents home, that's fine. Some kids, because yes 18 is still a basically a kid, want to leave because their home life is awful do to bad parents. Some people live in parts of the country where it's not feasible to get a place because rents are so high, It's best to let them stay at home so they can earn a safety net of 2 years rent and an income to allow them to rent what they can or to get a roommate. Some cultures that are nurturing and loving think it's crazy to kick your kids out at 18.

Loving parents like mine let me leave when I was ready. They also said that if I ever needed a home that I would have one in their house. I left and never needed to move back in with them. My mom passes away but should my father ever need a home, he's welcome to live with me. If you have or raised bad kids, you might be the problem.

HAH, Well it was the opposite for me. My parents moved out on me! They grew tired of taking care of more than what they needed, and bought a mobile home in a retirement park. Told me; You pay the mortgage, and the house is yours. :-)

Still livin here at 35. Sad isn't it? Jobs since I got out of school have all paid under $15/hr. So I have no other choice but to keep housing costs to zero. It's either living at home or living in a van. I prefer living at home since I get all this free stuff.

It's an old cultural thing that modern society and feminism have translated into a hateful attitude towards women. All about context.
