Just wanted to get some general thoughts from people- how much happiness does your house bring into your life? How would you rank it vs other things that bring you joy? Do you think it's shallow for your house to bring you happiness?

It's something I've been thinking about lately. My newlywed wife and I are soon moving from our 1 br apt into a new 4 br/3.5 ba 2610 sq ft townhouse. We're furnishing it with very nice furniture, appliances, and electronics. I have to admit, thinking about the new place and all the new stuff we're getting is getting us very happy and excited.

But sometimes I also feel weird about it. I grew up with my parents in a small 2 br/1 ba condo (and also lived there for 5 yrs after college). I've only had 1 br apts since then. So this new place is going to feel like a whole other world to me.

Also, when I watch those home shows on HGTV or The Fine Living network, I feel kind of turned off when I hear a couple raving about their hardwood floors or their fancy stove like it was their first-born child. I don't want to be like that.

So what do you guys think- how much happiness does your house bring to you?

I don't think there is anything with being excited about your new house. My family and I are very excited about closing on our first house. I can't begin to tell you how excited I am. However with that beign said, there is a point when you can get too materialistic and that's different. If you can afford to, I think you should buy things that will appeal to your eye. After all, you will come to it and reside in it everyday. Be proud? Yes. Be materialistice? I say no but that's a personal choice.

yes, when we bought our first home, we were very excited because we did it on our own as a major goal accomplished. We also came from poor surroundings so this brand new home was surreal...We had visions of beautiful drapes, lovely furniture, beautiful landscaping; we had bought SOME of those things but not ALL and were glad we did not because before having beautiful landscaping we had to buy a lawn mower, water hoses, lawn equipment; before drapes we had to buy blinds for ALL the windows or we'd be seen from the street or our neighbors. In other words, do not go overboard because there are a lot of things you will NEED before you should get what you WANT. Be proud you got your first home in tough housing/loan market, relish in that...Congratulations!!!!!!!!

Yes, Congrats original poster. I can so agree with this poster too,we
are in the process of buying/building a new Centex home here in Calif.and
we already have a list of NEEDS,and dream about the WANTS. We will
take it slowly and pick items slowly that we want. It is exciting, but we
have to remember that a new home isnt the most important thing but
the people who will reside in it,and visit it are.

My house doesn't bring me any happiness, but I think part of that is, because of the house, I'm stuck in a state with REALLY cold winters, when I would prefer to be down south. It is kinda nice, though to be able to go wacky with colors if I wanted to.

The house I am in brings me a lot of contentment, but maybe because now there is a place for everyone and everything. I hate clutter, and now with the space and a good layout, I find that I can find things easier and where they are makes a heck of lot of sense! I don't much care that right now it is bare of decor and such. I am more of a practical person anyhow so I would take my time in putting my little personal touches when the time and money permits.

For me, it's a sense of pride because it's something that I work hard for. I can look at my home and feel like I accomplished something. And while it's great to have nice furniture, i don't think that's the most important thing.

Our house is comfortable and wonderful-I like Molochai would change only one thing-to move this house to a warmer climate and be nearer our kids and grandkids-now that would be true happiness.

My property should bring us more happiness. But we have a NFH (neighborfromhell) which has diminished the experience considerably over the years. The thing that is nice about your own house, is you can do whatever you want to it regarding improvements and you don't have to worry about holes in the walls! And knowing you are putting your $$ into an investment of course is a good feeling.
I know what you mean about those shows turning you off. I don't watch many of them for that reason.

I think I feel more contentment than excitement, as another poster so eloquently described it. It isn't the furniture or the latest gee-gaw I bought, but the overall knowledge that my little place is an extension of me. If I don't like something, I can change it, and if I can't afford to change it, I adapt it to make do.

I rented my little house for two years before buying it, partly because I wanted to be sure there weren't any neighbors from hell nearby. I have about as much peace and quiet as one can expect living on the edge of downtown, and that is worth more to me than almost anything. I was a renter until I finally bought. I know about noisy neighbors.

The new furniture I bought after the purchase is nice, but the ability to paint the interior with abandon and change things without having to ask is very satisfying, believe me.
