Check out This Old House/Ask This Old House. They did an entire segment on a homeowner who was refurbishing a lighthouse to live in, including architectural plans. You can stream the episode from their website. It was pretty cool.
Edit: If I'm not mistaken the government made them have a functioning light...
I would love to live in a lighthouse. The view and the sound of the ocean would make it worth it.
I agree. I prefer urban areas, but if I had the opportunity to live in a lighthouse off a rocky shore somewhere between Massachusetts and Maine, I would jump on it in a heartbeat. I don't think anything would be more peaceful and serene than that.

Ah yes, the gentle sound of waves beating at your 3rd story windows...
Would you like climbing up, & down, many, many, many, many, old stone steps, around & around in a circle? Are there any old lighthouses that are open to the public, to check out, to get an idea?
I think there are parks built around lighthouses. The steps would be good exercise - there are many other issues of concern. Good point though.
