From time to time the Government auctions off lighthouses. They are usually in pretty poor condition and fairly small living quarters.

The government doesn't provide much info.

Can you park a boat safely?

Where does the water come from ? Plumbing?

Taxes-- do you have to pay local property taxes?

Every lighthouse is unique. Yes, once private, you pay property tax.

Check out This Old House/Ask This Old House. They did an entire segment on a homeowner who was refurbishing a lighthouse to live in, including architectural plans. You can stream the episode from their website. It was pretty cool.

Edit: If I'm not mistaken the government made them have a functioning light...

I would love to live in a lighthouse. The view and the sound of the ocean would make it worth it.

I agree. I prefer urban areas, but if I had the opportunity to live in a lighthouse off a rocky shore somewhere between Massachusetts and Maine, I would jump on it in a heartbeat. I don't think anything would be more peaceful and serene than that.

Having done some research-- most do not have good water and plumbing. The foghorn can be 140 decibels. View is nice.

Still not sure about boat parking.

Ah yes, the gentle sound of waves beating at your 3rd story windows...

Would you like climbing up, & down, many, many, many, many, old stone steps, around & around in a circle? Are there any old lighthouses that are open to the public, to check out, to get an idea?

I think there are parks built around lighthouses. The steps would be good exercise - there are many other issues of concern. Good point though.
