I'm not looking to sell it, just to get it to look lighter and distressed to give my bedroom a lighter look. I shouldn't use it at all or only if I'm trying to keep the value?

IF you like the look and do not care about whatever it is you are painting, then go ahead. If you later decide you do not like the look, you can just toss it.

If it is some truly historic piece of furniture of a unique design or quality it is kind of a shame to ruin it so no one else can enjoy it as part of history, but it is your thing. You can do with it what you will. break it apart an put it in the fireplace if that is your desire.

Personally, I dislike the look. I do not want my home to look like a shabby chik second hand store. (I prefer it look like a lived in museum). But you should do what you like. You bought the thing (or maybe picked it out of the trash), now make it look however you will most enjoy it.

It was given to me by a friend - it's probably 50-70 years old. It is small dresser and a large night table. The dresser is not in great shape as it is. Living in Florida I don't care for very dark furniture and I like the whole shabby chic thing but only in my bedroom. I've been wanting to do the furniture for a couple of years now and still haven't done it.

I certainly appreciate your advice and I'm not being sarcastic. Thank you. :-)
