We've had americast in every home we've lived in. Something about the shape DH likes, the back is more rounded or something. Never had chips. Never had trouble with any cracking or chipping. I saw them put the last one in, they used cans of foam underneath to support. They come in more configurations than just alcove ones (3 walls). Our last one was a drop in on a platform.
I picked colors other than white for these and they took weeks and weeks to get in. White ones are standard. Colors take a while. We had some sort of an acrylic or fiberglass tub in a rental one time and it was absolutely awful to clean. Stains never came out.
Hi i know you wrote about your American Standard redo in 2017 - so how did it hold up? and was it americast or one of their enameled steel versions?
THanks.

ha ha, "That sucker is heavy" made me laugh! Yes, I know they weigh a ton, not sure I want to put that much weight in my bathroom, second floor, imagine a flood too!? ugh....this decision is giving me sleepless nights bc it's not like a shoe that I can take on and off either, thanks for your response!
Probably several hundred thousand cast iron tubs that lived happily in a second floor bathrooms over the years.
I've been completely disappointed at how easily our Kohler cast/porcelain kitchen sink scratches.
Hi lovestoread, thanks for your post it was really helpful. as were others but all together, esp the piece about the specific drain option - that is brilliant. is your american standard an americast model or one of their enameled steel models? and as you wrote it in 2017.. any updates or guidance from experience now? thanks sherry
If it’s in your budget, go with the Kohler cast iron tub. I have many rentals and have used both. Cast iron Kohler is the better choice although the America Cast works well too. So if the cast iron is t in the budget, I wouldn’t be scared of the America’s either. I have several houses built in the 1950s and the cast iron tubs still look brand new. Just got back a rental from a 15 year tenant who never cleaned. But their Kohler cast iron tub (probably 20 years old) cleaned up to look at good as new. Also just got back a house from an 8 year tenant who never cleaned. They had an America cast tub about 13 years old. It also cleaned up very well but the finish on the Kohler still looked new. The America cast is clean but and looks pretty good, just more scratches and overall less luster. But considering the lack of care it had, I’d say it held up well.
Get the cast iron unit from Wisconsin. (Those Packer fans know how to create a tub!)
