Gee, my fancy new refrigerator's water filter is one of those 'smart' ones that turns off the water when 6 months is up, whether I've used it a lot or not. And, it is about $45 each time to replace it. If you have more control over it, you are lucky, and if the filtering isn't important to you, I say go for it.
I personally never use it for water or ice. I just think it looks better to have an ice maker on there. (Now that I'm typing that, I realize it makes no sense

That sucks....... Anyway of getting around it??
What if you just press the button to make the fridge THINK ya changed it??
I think that changing a water filter is very important. We really don't know which kind of containments can be found in that water, so I used to change a water filter in every six month. A $20-30 per six months isn't that much for safer water, especially if our kids drink it. I know that official brand replacements can be a bit expensive but, I'm usually buying these replacement that are "universal" for different refrigerator brands. There are some replacements that are great for more than only refrigerator type/brand.
While I was looking for the safest but also the cheapest replacements for water filter in my fridge I was found one very useful and helpful website. I can share a link with you people, so maybe it can help to someone as much it helped me.
So, this is the link https://www.bestproductspro.com/refrigerator-water-filters/ and I hope you can find it helpful.
Interesting question. Our freezer has an ice maker, but not water. Manual says to change filter every 6 months. BUT we have a whole house filter, and that filte is a much finer & more efficient filter than the refrigerator filter. THus we have no need for a filter in the fridge - but I think I'm in same boat as a prior poster - that the stupid "smart" appliance will turn off ice maker if filter not changed. Wish there was a way to bypass it.
