I've got a spot in my house where a chimney was removed. It's about 2' x 2' square, and 8' tall. I've been thinking about making it into a secret closet. I travel a lot and I have been burglarized a couple times in the last four years while I was gone, so it would be nice to have a spot to put away things like my laptop, Xbox, jewelry, etc.
It should be a fairly simple thing to do, the hardest part I think will be actually making the opening hard to detect and difficult to figure out how to open it.
There's a "secret room" under my livingroom. I have an old/historic house (1930s). Evidently an addition was built where a former backporch once was. The room underneath has a concrete wall and inaccessible. There is a very small opening/"window" (24"W x 12"H) in the back where I can peek in and see the room and the original steps of the back porch. Someone said that it could have been a room for coal storage because the opening/window is where a coal chute would have been. We're thinking about opening it up but it would have to be accessed through the potato room/root cellar.
When I was really young my folks bought a house that had what was sort of a secret level. I don't think it was intentional. It kinda looked like the house had been extensively remodeled or perhaps build over an old foundation. My cousin and I used to crawl underneath the front porch to get to the secret level...the only way it was accessible. There was a fireplace down there so was fun to hide toys and play under there.
My grandparents have a secret panel in a wall that goes into the attic. Its a really old historical house so I don't know if there was a secret purpose or not but its very hard to detect.
There are books written on how to build stuff like that. You never know might be good place to hide valuables or hide oneself if the country ever went to war or something.

Heh...that's sorta creepy. What if you opened it up and you found bodies in there? LOL
How about guying a safe and bolting it to the floor or building it into the wall? It seems to me that a decent safe would be more secure for your valuables and would add fire protection that a "secret room" wouldn't provide.

Oh Garth, but what's the fun in that? Safes are ugly, and bolting one to the floor is harder than you might think. I can say that because DH did it. The safe is behind cabinet doors that make it look like a linen closet next to the bedroom.
We don't have any hidden space but when we built our house 6 years ago, I filled an old wooden cigar box with trinkets and put it between the studs just before the drywall went on. I thought someday someone will have to go into the wall and they will get a surprise.
