I talked to an appliance dealer and they said they have never seen an island hood capable at that ceiling height. They say there is a lot of swaying motion when people tried and they have not found a solution for it. Wire cables help but don't eliminate significant swaying. Is there any solution?
You are talking to the wrong people / asking the wrong questions...

The RIGHT people to talk are those that have 12'+ ceilings and island cooktops. Those folks very likely have ARCHITECTS, KITCHEN DESIGNERS, and CONTRACTORS that have the SKILLS to get anything done. Of course the COST of such things that are CUSTOM is going to be FAR HIGHER than getting "stock" solutions from "appliance dealers"...
There are legitimate reasons to prefer something other than an "island cooktop with hood" in situations where there is a 46,000 btu range and 12'+ ceilings include the COST of essentially a COMMERCIAL ROOFTOP EXHAUST fan that will work. The stack will need to be finished by COMMERCIAL SS contractor who will expect the supports to be done by a COMMERCIAL interior fabrication firm that likely will build a skeleton of lightweight steel. Costs for these materials and labor may be in the tens of thousands but for folks who want that "magazine look" gladly pay those prices...

So you are saying other than spending tens of thousands of dollars, there is NO other way....
Just a thought...island cooktops can be pretty annoying. I personally want a clean surface on my island.
There are hoods that have Recirculation fans - that may be the kind that works better in your situation.
I agree. An island cooktop is a deal breaker for me. Takes away the best prep space and creates a hazard by having a hot stove that is accessible from all sides. My inlaws had one with a downdraft vent. They hated it for those reasons. Jay
Yep, from resale perspective, I feel the same way. Most people do NOT want a cooktop in their island, esp those with young children.
