I like the two-stories houses much better.

They have curb-appeal and look grander. The house is more energy efficient. There is separate living and sleeping space. I would hate to sleep in my master right next to the noisy living room or smelly kitchen.

Am I the odd one here?

Lack of stairs for the most part, especially for older buyers.

I've fallen going up the stairs in my house already and my old dog has fallen going down the stairs. I'd love a single story house, but with the master on a separate end of the house from the living room. And smelly kitchen? You might want to actually clean up. Mine isn't smelly (unless I'm cooking fish, but then I'm not trying to sleep then, either).

Funny how things work out sometimes. I like a 2 story house. My Daughter-in-law likes a single story house.

We ended up building a 1 story and they ended up buying a 2 story.

I have to say, though, ours still looks quite grand even being a single story.

Similar to this but instead of the small third car bay, it is our flex space and there is a window instead of a garage door: https://www.trulia.com/builder-commu...lan/4037756763

Not sure what you mean by separate living and sleeping space as most 2 story homes have the master downstairs in my market. If it's upstairs, it's usually because it's a lower price point or they're trying to capture views of the lake or hill country. For the most part, the master is behind the living room, sharing a wall.

I am a single older person and have a condo, but there is a beautiful red one-story ranch house on a big corner lot on the way home from my train, and if I ever could pick a house I'd want to have, it would be that one.

Of course, I would have to fill up all that space with cats and dogs, and then I would be one of Those Ladies.

But even a younger person can get sick and tired of schlepping stuff up and down the stairs. I sure did.

I've lived in both, and 1-story is better.

How old people in Europe handle stair. I guess that is why there is more obesity in the US.

The house is more energy efficient. That would be a false statement based on your "personal opinion".
There is separate living and sleeping space. Last time I looked pretty much every "home"has "separate living and sleeping space"s.
I would hate to sleep in my master right next to the noisy living room or smelly kitchen.would it not be a safe assumption that if you're in bed that everyone else would be also (no noise in living room). If the kitchen is truly "smelly" perhaps cleaning it before going to bed would help(?)

Am I the odd one here?
Based on those statements? Yes.

It's obviously personal preference.

However... If the smells coming from your kitchen aren't a GOOD thing? You're doing it wrong.
