This is supposed to include new duct work and vapor barrier in my very low crawl space. And a new return installed in the house. The only thing it doesen't include is a thermostat because the power co is providing me with a NEST at the end of the month.
The unit is a Crane 14 Seer and that is all I know about it. I'm working on getting a second opinion but I'm a single woman at the mercy of a fast talking salesman.
For what it's worth, the old unit is 34 year old and my home inspection showed that it and the duct work were going to need replacement so this is not a surprise, nor do I think I'm being scammed. Just want to know if that is a typical ballpark for such things.
$14K is a lot of money. The guy said most people cry when they get the estimate. I didn't cry only because I had been forewarned by the home inspection.

The old unit is 34 YEARS OLD??? Most people would have replaced it twice by now. You are hella lucky. I think 14k sounds fair for the extensive work that is being done, but I would get THREE quotes.
My HVAC was replaced in 2010 (new furnace and outside A/C unit) at a cost of $6k. It's a 15 seer. But none of the extra crawlspace work you are having done. Mine did include a VERY nice thermostat.
FYI - the minimum rating of 14 is required for air conditioners that will be used for Southeastern and Southwestern states that have hotter climates. You are in NC so 14 should be fine really. It will be a massive improvement I am sure.

I was paying on average $16-19k 10yrs ago for 14SEER (13 was the minimum then) for new construction. So about $8-10k/floor (all houses were 2sty on basement).
Your price is one system(?) and tear out an old system for $14k? Prices in NC are fairly comparable to ATL.
Yeah, heat pumps are expensive. I had a 3 unit system put in 7 years ago that turned out to be a piece of...and just replaced it with a 2 unit system last month. Cha-ching, Cha-ching. At least we didn't have to do the duct work like we did the first time around. But, I think it is worth it. So far with this new system, our electricity bills have gone down and the house is more comfortable temp wise.
About 10 years ago I paid $9000 for installation of a conventional AC, gas furnace, and ductwork in a 1400 sq.ft. house. If your house is any bigger than mine, $14k sounds in range.

So, if you’re not crying- you must be whining.
yes to the whining. It's painful! Luckily I sold my last home for a crap-ton of money so I have the cash, I just don't want to get cheated.
