I know it's called a "depth" filter but I have no idea what model/brand/size I should be using. The label on the side is worn to just the leftover glue. Would like to put one in but no idea what should go there.

Have you tried the CUNO website? Looks like it's made by 3M.

That looks awfully old, and the canister seems to be empty. The address has "Meriden CONN U.S.A." -- when did we switch to two-letter state codes?

I was looked ng around the site, not a ton of info but the house is only 20 years old. Canister is empty cause I removed the old filter and tossed it without thinking of the replacement. Stupid move.

Email them a picture of your filter canister and see if they can identify it. Tell them it's about 20 years old.

Looks like a Cuno CFS01T, still sold, takes reasonably standard 10" nominal (9 3/4" x 2.5") cartridges. It's got a built-in shutoff valve, which makes it a little fancier than your normal filter housing. As for what to put in to it, depends on what you want to do.

Yes - standard filter. You should be able to buy replacements at Home Depot or Lowe's - even some Sears stores. While you're at it, get some silicone LUBE, and lube the housing threads and o-ring. It should be water-tight when tightened by hand - do NOT use a wrench to tighten it!

(been doing this for 40 years.....lol)

Thanks for this, seriously helps. The shutoff is a nice feature since I pulled the old one awhile back makes it much cleaner and easier. The housing comes with a large plastic circle wrench piece that is used for securing. I'll add a little silicone to the O-ring as well.

Oh - sorry....you're looking for a dirt/rust filter. Between 5 and 20 microns.

I picked up a 5 micron filter, one that has carbon packed into its cartridge. Excited to see if there is any difference.

Yeah....it's quite likely that it'll plug quicker, since there's not nearly as much filtration area. But, no biggie - you can always go back to a regular filter if it plugs too quickly.
