The labor may be easy, getting the parts at a reasonable prices are not. What's the current retail price for the timer on your 1986 Kenmore (the lowest price for the mechanical one on my Maytag was $180)?

Bought a new one for lowes for $400, when it came it had a dent that didnt affect function and they gave an option for discount or exchange, I took the discount and they dropped $75 off the price.

$325 for a washer puts in the disposable goods category.

The price of no thrill washer has stayed more or less the same in the last 20 years, i.e. between $400-450.

It is unwise to spend over $100 to fix it because likely another problem will emerge soon. So if there is another problem in 6 months, are you going to spend another $100+ for repair?

Better buy a new one and use a credit card that offers 2-year extended warranty. That will give you 3 year protection.

I have a matched set of Maytag's bought one at a time for about $75ea.
One at habitat and the other from a used appliance shop.

If/when either needs a deep repair? Rinse & repeat.
Currently the dryer only does timed dry. bfd
