Why is the dimension so critical?
How far off from 24" are they?

in order to avoid having to rent a crane. outside unit is on the roof of a 3 story condo.
The 24" is the maximum opening space for gaining access through the roof dropdown/opening.

I'm sure the cost of the crane will be cheaper than trying to hunt down a specific sized condenser that's most likely a specially made unit.

Newer refrigerants require larger condensing coils- almost all of today's condensers are considerably larger physically than those of R-22/R-12 units.

You’re right about that. My house uses a 2.5 ton system, and the 15seer unit I have now is almost twice the size of the old 10 seer unit it replaced. It sure is much quieter though.

You need a side discharge condenser that's suitcase shaped. Carrier makes a 24AHA4. They aren't cheap.

Have you actually priced a crane? In Phoenix, they only charge like $150 to set an a/c unit & pull the old one down. Might be worth checking vs paying a lot extra for an oddball unit.

Not personally....but was told by a couple of contractors in my area (northern VA) that it's about 500-600. yikes.

EDIT: just called a company right now....they quoted me 650
