Can I get one and have it run just in the summer or does it have to run all year round?

Can I set it up to drip into the basement drain ?

You can run a humidifier whenever you want to run it. Most have hose attachments so you can attach it to a drain, yes. I have one in my house and just run it when it is getting too humid as they tend to be noisy and put off a lot of heat.

Think it’s dry enough in winter to not run it?

No way for us to know that. You're the one that lives there. Buy a humidity monitor.

I can’t imagine a dehumidifier working very well in cold temperatures. The whole idea is warmer humid air passing through a cold coil, thereby creating condensation, which then drips into a container or out a hose.

Imagine a glass of ice water sitting in an 80 degree room, it’s going to sweat and run down onto the table. Now take that same glass of ice water and put it in a 50 degree room, chances are it’s not going to sweat very much.

We have a very small cottage (mostly vacant) with an unfinished basement in the NC mountains. We run the dehumidifier there year-round. One year, it broke and by the time we got there in the summer, it took a couple of weeks to make it smell less 'earthy'.

We've hired someone to check the house once a month in our absence. That allows us to place Damp Rid down there (more for odor than dehumidifying). In addition, we are now considering buying an even larger unit.

So yes, you can put a dehumidifier in the basement.

This has been answered. I'll add my 1 cent. We've been using dehumidifiers for decades and it moved with us. It's real simple to monitor. In our new house, we have two going (one was left here by the sellers) with one draining into the drain, and one that I manually empty. In humid days, it fills up pretty quickly and I just monitor it. When little water is collected over a period of many hours, I turn it off. I prefer humidity to be no higher than 30% (and it gets lower here).

In our last house, we recycled the water collected into buckets and used that to water our gardens and plants.
Saved on water bills.

Just check the output. You may want to run it more (or less). I wouldn't make a blanket statement because each year is different.
