For the most part the sensors are smarter than the old 9V smoke that used to be used. You also have detectors that are combinations smoke heat CO. The average cost of a replaced detector in one of our rentals is $50. I get the type that are not the removable battery type. I test once a year

Just a word about units that have photoelectric technology -- we had a bunch of them and got rid of them. The slightest bit of dust drifting by the sensor would set it off. At 3 AM. :O If you're a more scrupulous housekeeper than I am, maybe that won't happen to you.

Well, frankly, if you have dust drifting past your ceilings, it's not as much a matter of housekeeping as keeping the barn door shut.

I have a number of dual sensor (photo electric/ionization) detectors and I have yet to have one false alarm. And it can get dusty.
