I have a heat gun that I've used for removing paint from wood before, but I'm hesitant to use it on this glass shade until I know it won't damage the original coloring. Has anyone tried anything like this?

I'm also hesitant to use chemicals for the same reason.

Will the heat gun do anything to the original finish?

Goo Gone. Very, very unlikely to damage the glass unless it's got some kind of coating on it. You could test a dab on a part of the glass that can't be seen.

I'd be wary of heat because differential heating could crack the shade. Or worse - I once had a soda bottle explode into red-hot fragments, all of which traveled away from me, fortunately, or I'd be working in a circus sideshow.

Latex paint?
Hot soapy water- let it sit for awhile, it'll wash right off.

I'll try that first then, before moving on to things that take off oil paint.

If it was frosted by abrasion (sandblasting), chemical removal will have no detrimental effect. You may need to use a toothbrush to get all the paint out of the pitting.

Old latex (>5 years) can be as resistant to water as oil paint.

Thank you so much for this tip! I let it sit for about 2 hours in (what started as) hot water and was able to scrub away the paint with the rough side of a sponge and some elbow grease. Good as new!

Goof-off is an product that will work if soaking is not adequate.

That's good-
It's good thing you didn't have to go to some chemical- especially "petroleum based" products like Goof-Off, or Goo-Gone. They can stain- then you'd be doing more cleaning/degreasing.
