I live on a rural dirt road with houses on 3-4 acre parcels scattered in between spruce woodlands across a fairly large hillside. I can see one house directly downslope from my front windows. This house was built on a steeply sloping lot below the level of the road. Whoever laid the place out never considered fall, winter, or spring; in other words the majority of the year. This is a rainy snowy place. The short driveway plunges right off the road at a 90 degree angle and makes a bee line for the house. A runaway vehicle could and probably has hit the house itself. I've noticed replaced siding at just about truck bumper height. Have to admit that watching these people navigate their deeply diving coaster track is a form of bush town entertainment...especially in winter.

There's been about a foot of snow on the ground since Thanksgiving. Most of the family seems to be gone so no one is keeping the driveway cleared. One 20-something kid shows up at the house every two weeks or so. Every single time he does he attempts to drive his PU all the way to the house. Sometimes he gets close, most of the time he doesn't. The truck ends up buried to the axles, the kid spends an hour or so shoveling, revving, backing, spinning, sliding, getting even more stuck, and eventually calls for help. He never has tire chains, never has weight in the bed, but he does have a phone. Sometimes a wrecker shows up, sometimes a buddy with another PU. The second truck often gets stuck too. They've been out there in the 20 degree pitch dark for almost 2 hours tonight, trying to drag that truck up onto the road that sits dozens of feet higher and at a 90 degree angle.

Sometimes I wonder about people. How many times will it take for him to learn he has no business going any where near that driveway?

You're a good story teller. Made me giggle. I can see it all clearly.

Well, he'll probably learn when his buddies and the tow guy all stop agreeing to help get him out...again.

Oh my...yes, I'd wonder too about them.

He thinks he's going to get a different result after doing the same over and over???

A little twist of humor for your day and mine....

Some people never learn! Others manage to rethink their approach and change after failing at something for the first time, others might make the same mistake several times before changing.

For you, it’s basically entertainment and witnessing how not to do something!

As you find it entertaining, have you stopped by to explain winter driving to him?

Instead of watching the ignorance of others, perhaps you need a hobby so you're not sitting by a window for hours contemplating "why".

Some people are just stupid. If I was the buddy he keeps calling, he would get an ear full from me and I would quit coming to help.

Neighbor across the street from my parents has a similar driveway, he was very happy when they moved in. He takes the coal ash, it's like putting down concrete over ice/snow.

I used to live in town and the one neighbor was one of those types always out in the yard with the blower or doing something else, would even come down to our corner and blow the debris up the entire street. We had a ice storm the one year and it was like inch thick or better and it was going to be cold for quite a while. He has all nice new concrete and didn't want to salt it. I offer him the ash and it was with great pleasure as I watched him dump it all over his walks and driveway.
