Fortunately it wasn't carpet but walls that got splattered including walls on both sides of a staircase. It looked like an axe murderer had stopped in for a visit.

Some good suggestions here. I was leaning toward trying the dish detergent first, but the dog and carpet owner decided we should get a commercial product. I found one with hydrogen peroxide as the first ingredient, which people also suggested. I think I'll try both methods in several spots, and I'll let you know if one wins over the other!
